NDSU vs EWU 50 to 44

The NDSU ‘Bison’ host the Eastern Washington ‘Eagles’ in the 26th annual Trees Bowl game sponsored by the North Dakota Forest Service.

NDSU QB, Easton Stick, set career highs for completions with 17 of 27 against Charleston Southern. The Bison will need all of this and more to deal with Eastern Washington’s top-rated FCS passing attack. The EWU Eagles passed for 496 yards in a 45–42 win over the Washington State ‘Cougars’ (a Pac–12 Team) last week. EWU first-year starting quarterback Gage Gubrud went 34 of 40 and scored five touchdowns with one interception. Cooper Kupp (FCS Offensive Player of the Year) caught 12 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns, and threw a 22-yard pass of his own. The EWU Defense held WSU scoreless for a 31-minute span from the second to fourth quarters. Would they do the same to the NDSU ‘Bison’?

Game Preview

Pregame

History
The Bison are the five time defending FCS National Champions. But it could have been six. Eastern Washington won the national title in 2010. EWU hosted NDSU in the quarterfinals that year. Bison fans will never forget that game. They felt robbed of a touchdown, and a shot at an earlier crown. Of course none of the players on this year’s Bison squad remember that game. But Bison Pride runs deep. The fans, players, and coaches would like a little payback.

The 2010 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoff game was held during a snowstorm on December 11th in Cheney. This was nothing for the cold weather Bison. They may play in a dome, but they practice outside in the ND cold. NDSU capitalized on five EWU turnovers in the second half. The Eagles finally scored on a 13-play, 90-yard drive with 23 seconds to play. They tied the game. EWU QB Bo Levi Mitchell was 13-of–32 for 141 yards, two interceptions and three touchdowns in the game. Before that 90-yard drive he only had 38 yards passing.
Second and Goal, NDSU QB Brock Jensen fumbled at the goal line in overtime. Or did he? On replay it looked like his knee was down before the ball came out. Jensen was stretching the ball over the goal line. J.C. Sherritt stripped the ball from his hands. It could have been ruled a touchdown. After a very long review the officials ruled it a fumble recovered by the Eagles_’ Zach Johnson. The Eagles_ went on to easily win the 2010 FCS title that year. NDSU departed with a fire in their belly.

Injuries
Eastern Washington is playing without its two starting Linebackers: Miquiyah Zamora (hamstring) and Alek Kacmarcik (concussion). NG Matthew Sommer is out with a knee injury as is Nick Foerstel. Conner Baumann is recovering from an ankle injury. WR Cooper Kupp’s younger brother LB Ketner Kupp will be playing today’s game as will LB Kurt Calhoun; the first games of their careers. Kurt’s older brother Tim Calhoun played tight end for the Eagles in 2002–06.

Game Day
Kick off on Gate City Bank Field was at 2:34 pm and the game was over 6:40 pm. Yes, 4:06 hours long. 18,906 in attendance at the Fargodome.

The EWU Eagle Team Captains came out to mid-field: WR #10 Cooper Kupp, TE #9 Zach Wimberly, DB #32 Zach Bruce, and WR #1 Shaq Hill and met with NDSU Bison Team Captains: RB #25 Chase Morlock, LB #41 MJ Stumpf, FS #3 Tre Dempsey, and DT #99 Nate Tanguay for the coin toss. Post Game

Upon further review, this one was a classic. – Jim Allen

Nick DeLuca
The NDSU Bison played through injuries and penalties to win this game. LB #49 Nick DeLuca was named NDSU Player Of The Game and Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) Defensive Player Of The Week.

“DeLuca finished with a team-high 15 tackles, even though he was a game-time decision with a shoulder injury.” -Eric Peterson.

DeLuca added a Pick-Six when he score on a 4th Quarter Interception. After next week’s Iowa game, DeLuca would go in for shoulder surgery and be out for rest of the season.

NDSU Safeties
Robbie Grimsley and Eric Bachmeier left the game with injuries as did CB Jaylaan Wimbush. It was obvious that NDSU was struggling in the secondary which played to Eastern Washington’s strengths. It also appeared all the play reviews worked in EWU’s favor. It gave the Eagles time to catch their breath and design their next play. Time management seemed to work against NDSU. They left points on the field as time ran out at the half. The official reviews seemed to stall our drives. The penalties hurt the Bison bad (13 for 137 yards). Two Fifteen-yard: Illegal Blocks Below The Waist penalties in row were extremely frustrating. It’s a block NDSU has always thrown but it’s now an infraction that is emphasized this year by the NCAA.

Cooper Kupp and Gage Gubrud
NDSU coach Chris Klieman before the game, “Kupp is a phenomenal player, we’ll have our hands full!”
Kupp came into today’s game as the FCS leader in career touchdown receptions. Kupp scored his 60th TD early in the second quarter; tying Jarett Dillard of Rice University (2005–08). Kupp broke Dillard’s record later in the quarter. Kupp scored three touchdowns at Washington State last week setting a FCS record. The previous FCS record of 58 touchdowns was set by David Ball, New Hampshire (2003–06). Kupp has 8 FCS records, 8 Big Sky Conference all-time marks and 18 school records. His in 5,032 reception yards puts him second behind by Elon Terrell Hudgins (2006–09) and 67 receptions behind the Hudgin’s record of 395. Unfortunately for EWU, Kupp sprained his shoulder early in the Second Quarter. Unfortunately for NDSU, it seemed to make no difference to Quarterback Gage Gubrud. He continues his record setting pace finding receivers all over the field and avoiding the Bison pass rush. Gubrud was 26 of 40 for 450 yards, four Touchdowns, but 3 interceptions. His longest throw was for 37 yards to Stu Stiles who had eight receptions for 169 yards and a Touchdown. Kendrick Bourne had eight receptions for 133 yards. Kupp before he went out had 62 yards and two Touchdowns. Gubrud hit four other receivers for 86 yards. Thank God for the turnovers it was the only thing that slowed the EWU offense down.

Quotes

EWU Head Coach, Beau Baldwin
Anytime you just play against great competition and against great players, it helps you as you go further in your season. That’s especially true with our non-conference schedule heading into our conference schedule, which is always tough. We can take a lot from this, and we will. Win or lose, you just have to continue to correct mistakes and look at things you did well at a really, really high level. Most of all, I’m proud of our players for competing like Warriors against a very good North Dakota State team. We were fighting back and fighting back all the way to take the lead in the fourth quarter.
(Video Review) It was strange in that way. It was not to anyone’s advantage, both teams had the same goofy flow. It’s no one’s fault, it’s just weird occurrences that happened at different times. You bring in Instant Replay and there are going to be more stoppages.
There were 194 plays that we graded before overtime. Well, 193 of those happened and we miss a field goal on the 194th play.. It’s never one play that wins or loses you a ballgame. Even if we are in a situation where the field goal goes in, it doesn’t change the other 200 plays, counting special teams, that were in the game.
I’m just proud of our players, and I’m not caught up in the end result with how I feel about how these guys came in here and battled. It was a game either team could have won and came down to the wire. Give them credit, (NDSU) they found a way to win. We’ll be back swinging next week.. From a broad perspective in how we competed, our attitude and our effort, I loved how it felt – the entire game. I know we got down 10, but we never rolled over. We kept fighting and threw punches on both sides of the ball. We got some key stops late and made some big plays to score some key points.
EWU Linebacker, Miquiyah Zamora
We’ve got to reset, because it’s a different animal with (NDSU) their power running game. This really makes you get on your toes.
EWU Quarterback, Gage Gubrud
Weapons everywhere. Everyone knows about Cooper, but we have dudes everywhere. Guys were going up and making great plays and getting hit. We were in good shape with the guys we got.
NDSU Head coach, Chris Klieman
What was that, about a five-hour affair? What time is it, 10 o’clock?
We have a lot of guys play through a lot pain that kept going out there to play. They did it for their brother, and that is the culture of NDSU football. All college football wins are hard, and all college football wins count.. When you played Top–10 teams, you’re not always going to play perfect.
The negative part of having two great competitive games is we didn’t get a chance to see some of the depth and that obviously is something we’re going to need as we get into Valley play. That’s something we’re a little nervous about in that we played X amount of guys on Defense and X amount of guys on Offense and that probably is not going to change a whole lot this week.. It’s so important to win those inter-conference battles, but having those Ws (wins) under our belt probably affected us in developing depth.
I know this, we don’t win five National Championships without the same blocking scheme that we had on Saturday.. I think we’re blocking the same way, it’s just maybe subjective on how you want to see it. Is it a Chop Block or not? If they’re not, then we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing because it’s been successful for the five years that I’ve been here.
Tre Dempsey, what a play. That is as good an interception as I’ve ever seen.
Unknown fan yelling at the officials after Dempsey’s interception.
You can’t overturn this one Bucko.
NDSU Running Back, Lance Dunn, on his game winning run..
Coach said that we need to win one-on-ones, and when I got out there, that’s what I did.. When the Safety came up, I knew I needed to make a play. (Tre Dempsey) made the play (Interception) and we knew we were going to have to make a play on offense.
NDSU Linebacker, Nick DeLuca
They were explosive.. We knew we were going to face adversity.
NDSU Quarterback, Easton Stick
Let’s go win it. That’s what we talk about. When you get a chance to end the game with the ball in your hands, you’ve got to do it.. Disbelief that it was the first-play, two in a row. It’s been a lot of fun. I think we’ve grown a ton.
Forum Communications, Jeff Kolpack
