NDSU at UNI 24 to 20

If there is one game you can always count on to be good, it’s the NDSU Bison playing the UNI Panthers.

The two best; most similar teams in the Missouri Valley Football Conference: NDSU (6–1, 3–1 MVFC) at Northern Iowa (3–4, 2–2 MVFC). It’s hard to believe this is the 50th meeting since to 1938. But there were plenty of games against UNI before NDSU went Division I in 2008.
The UNI Panthers won two years ago; breaking NDSU’s 33-game win streak, so the Bison are looking for a little playback. Would they get it today in the UNI-Dome?

Game Review

Pre-Game

Since jumping to Division I in 2008, NDSU has modeled their team on the UNI ‘Panthers’ and since then it’s become a question of who does the Iowa model better. Actually, this physical style of football has been NDSU’s bread and butter since the early 1960s. What has changed is the size of the young men that play the game. Both teams have large, fast, and physical players. So today’s game we will see who is bigger, who is faster, who is more physical, and who plays with fewer mistakes.

UNI like NDSU features a strong defense. The Panthers rank third in scoring defense and 2nd in total defense (in the MVFC). The Panthers allow only 303 yards per game. The Bison are ranked second and fourth respectively. UNI tops the MVFC with a +9 turnover margin. They have been averaging 2.25 turnovers per game. Hopefully this won’t bite NDSU, as Quarterback Easton Stick is coming off two bad games. He had two interceptions against Western Illinois last week.

UNI Quarterback Aaron Bailey is coming off an injury and isn’t ready yet. Last week QB Eli Dunne was named the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week and the FCS National Player of the Week. No surprise, head coach Mark Farley is starting Dunne against the Bison today.

Game Day
The game was played from 6:07 pm. to 9:26 pm in the UNI-Dome (Cedar Falls, IA.) There were 12,032 fans in attendance.

UNI Team Captains: #15 Aaron Bailey, #30 D’Shawn Dexter, #72 Robert Rathje and #93 Karter Schult met the NDSU team captains for the coin toss. UNI won the toss and deferred. NDSU will receive at north end zone.

Post Game

Because the teams were so similar, looking at the Game Stats shows where the separation occurred. The Panthers beat the Bison in the air, on third down, and had fewer penalties. But the Bison won on the ground with a 217–68 yard advantage. The Panthers’ passing advantage was negated by four interceptions and a fumble. (The Bison had two interceptions.)

SS Robbie Grimsley grabbed the first interception in the first quarter which led to a King Frazier Touchdown run. TE Jeff Illies caught a 31-yard Touchdown pass in the second quarter. RB Chase Morlock ran for another Touchdown in the third quarter, and Kicker Cam Pedersen added a field goal in the fourth for NDSU. UNI was able to move the ball but the NDSU defense stiffened at the goal line forcing the Panthers to settle for two field goals in the first half. QB Eli Dunne threw two Touchdown passes in the second half, but was plagued by interceptions. Dunne was hurried by the Bison defensive front. Twice his helmet was knocked off from hard hits and he was sacked three times.

NDSU Quarterback Easton Stick had his own bad interception. Stick under-threw a wide open RJ Urzendowski (an easy 7-points), UNI’s Malcolm Washington made the interception, and Dunne converted it into a Touchdown. What could have been a 28 to 6 lead was suddenly 21–13.

After NDSU Running Back King Frazier left the game with bruised ribs, RB Lance Dunn carried the ball 23 times for 118 yards. At the Half, NDSU led UNI 77 to 25 yards rushing. UNI had only 11 yards in the 4th quarter and 68 yards for the game. RB #10 Lance Dunn was named NDSU Player Of The Game.

FS Tre Dempsey leads the Missouri Valley Football Conference with five interceptions. He was named MVFC Defensive Player of the Week after his two interceptions in this game.
LB Matt Plank easily caught a deflection for an interception with two minutes left in the game. The coaches advice to drop deeper on pass defense paid off. Plank and Dempsey’s interceptions on the final two UNI drives allowed NDSU to post a 24–20 win.

Quotes

UNI head coach, Mark Farley
(In the lead-up) I don’t see a lot of difference (in NDSU.) Every year there are different players, different play-calling, but all and all it is the same football team, a good football team. They are confident and their execution is good. They are in games until the end. They believe they can win, so it has to be a battle to the last play anytime you play these guys.
Honestly, we’ve owned this league for years and now North Dakota State has taken possession of it. We’re at the stage where we need to recruit a few more guys and play the kind of football UNI has.
That’s the expectation, they (UNI) actually had control of that football game. We started getting control late in the third and took it to the fourth. We had good rhythm, played hard and it was a good football game.
(On Plank’s interception) Yeah, he (Tyvis Smith) should have caught it but at the same time it’s a football game and Tyvis played his butt off.. We were moving the chains very good and then the tip ball, our guy had it. He was open and anytime a running back tips the ball it is always going to be an interception to a linebacker further back. He had the opportunity to make that play, I thought Eli gave him a chance, and he’s more upset than anybody.. It is not just that one play.. is it his fault? No.
UNI quarterback, Eli Dunne
We got some good field position and I was able to get the ball into some of the guys’ hands and they were able to make some guys miss. In the second half, we are able to do some really good things, but we just made too many mistakes that cost us.
(NDSU) have a really good defense. They will show you a lot of different things. This is my fourth game I have been part of and they have always been close, hard-fought games. What I have noticed is they don’t make a lot of mistakes. They always figure out how to get it done.
UNI defensive end, Karter Schult
A lot of preparation is going into this week. It is very, very exciting. Not only because it is the NDSU game, but we know what the stakes are for us. We can’t have any more mistakes and that is how we take it.
The entire team felt pretty good. We had stepped up on defense a couple of times. Momentum was on our side, but just unfortunate coincidences, mishaps, whatever you want to call it.
UNI defensive end, Rickey Neal
Personally, I feel like we are David and they are Goliath. I came here because I wanted to slay Goliath, and I have a band of brothers that want to slay Goliath.
NDSU head coach, Chris Klieman
Look at the last X amount of times we have played and it has been a physical, physical game. Both teams are going to do what they do and whoever executes the best is the one that comes out on top.
Just like we thought, it was a slug-fest. Two good football teams went at it today and we were a resilient to find a way to win.. The turnovers were critical for us.
There’s a lot of people doubt our guys, a win is a win. I don’t care if it’s a four-point win or an eight-point win, some people want us to win by 30 all the time. My hats off to our guys, they played their tails off.
We tell them (the Bison defense) all the time, you guys have the opportunity to win the game, you need to do it. I don’t care how many stops you have to get, you have to get them.. Even when we get up, we find a way to shoot ourselves in the foot and then they get back into the game. That’s the Valley. That’s how good the Valley is.
What did we run for today? A hundred and fifty? A hundred and twenty? Two-seventeen! You tell me the last time Northern Iowa’s given up 217. That’s pretty doggone successful. I’ll take that every danged time. Easton missed a wide open RJ or we go up 28–6. We have some work to do in the passing game. Make no mistake.. We run for 217 yards against Northern Iowa, that’s pretty doggone good.
NDSU linebacker, Matt Plank
We did feel the momentum swing there. That’s when we as a defense said we have to pick our level of play up. That’s what you have to do as a defense, you have to rise to the challenge.
I was getting yelled at all week to get more depth on my drop. I saw it up in the air. Step one: catch it. Step two: don’t drop it. (Plank’s interception)
NDSU defensive end, Brad Ambrosius
I think coach (Jim) Kramer refers to us as dome babies. It does (feel different) but that’s just because it’s not as loud when we’re on the field. A dome is a dome, you’re not outside and there’s no wind.. It’s big to win anywhere you go.
