NDSU vs YSU 24 to 3

Break out the green Harvest Helmets, it’s time for the 43rd annual Harvest Bowl. The NDSU ‘Bison’ host the Youngstown State ‘Penguins’ in the Fargodome.

It’s been a tough schedule for NDSU this season and it doesn’t get any easier. The Bison will be playing the Penguins, their 7th ‘Top–25’ ranked opponent this year. YSU leads the MVFC in rushing with 237.8 yards per game, but NDSU’s defense is limiting opponents to 93.8 yards per game. Both teams have big-time scoring defenses. NDSU with 18.4 points per game, and YSU with 15.5. The ‘Bison’ offense is no slouch rushing, averaging 223.4 yards per game. But the YSU defense allows only 102.9 yards. NDSU, YSU, and SDSU are all tied at 4–1 in the Missouri Valley conference. Last year, NDSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to win 27–24 at Youngstown. The Penguins are looking to return the favor this year in Fargo.

Note: I wrote the Summary (below) shortly after the game, which I attended and photographed. My photographs cover most of the game and each photo’s description follows the play-by-play, so I recommend you look at the photos in the gallery or use the slideshow for a visual play-by-play of the game.

Game Review

Pre-Game

It’s been a difficult schedule for the ‘Bison’, and it’s showing up on the injury report. Running Back, King Frazier had x-rays on his ribs after the Northern Iowa game last week. (a cartilage issue) Cornerback, Jaylaan Wimbush is suited up for today’s game but will see limited play. Wide Receiver, Erik Perkins will be held out, as will Running Back, Bruce Anderson with a sprained ankle. There goes our return game.

Today’s game was played from 2:34 pm. to 5:34 pm., on Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome with 18,332 in attendance.

Youngstown State won the Coin Toss. They elect to defer to the second half.

North Dakota State 24, Youngstown State 3

Post Game

Chase Morlock was named the NDSU Player Of The Game for his 71-yard Touchdown run.

Youngstown State won the stats war, but were unable to convert yardage to points. The ‘Penguins’ ran 70 plays to the ’Bison’s 44 plays. They had five more First Downs, four more Third Down conversions, and held the ball 11:36 minutes longer than NDSU. YMU had 37 fewer yards of Penalties and out-threw NDSU 222 to 89 yards. But NDSU won the Turnovers. They won on the ground 240 to 92 yards. They won the Special Teams battle even without Anderson and Perkins. NDSU limited YSU to one –4 yard punt return. YSU also missed two Field-Goal attempts.
Youngstown’s twin Quarterback attack had no affect. If anything it gave the Bison twice as many people to Sack and Intercept.
It wasn’t all good news for NDSU. We lost DT Nate Tanguay for the season. He joins LB Nick DeLuca, LB Chris Board, and FB Brock Robbins. Injuries that are going to be hard to overcome as the season progresses.

Summary

The Youngstown ‘Penguin’ players are practicing in front of us. They don’t look very big. I hope that’s a good sign. It was a good game full of details that made it interesting and fast paced. The ‘Bison’ defense dominate and caused many turn overs. The ‘Bison’ Special Teams were excellent. I learned how a short punt can be as effective as a long punt: when the hang-time requires a ‘Fair Catch’ and no return. The ‘Bison’ Offense was able to put points on the board early; forcing Youngstown into a one dimensional game.
DT #99 Nate Tanguay suffered a season ending injury to his ACL. He knew it too, as Nate tried to get up, he came right back down. He ripped off his helmet and threw it to the ground in frustration. In the second half, Nate was on the sidelines, in street clothes, a leg brace, ice pack, and crutches to cheer on his team and offer advice to the ‘next man up’. Because the ‘Bison’ Offense hasn’t played well in the 3rd and 4th quarters, Youngstown had a shot until the very last drive. Although this game wasn’t as exciting as the first two, it was a very satisfying win 24 to 3. Every scoring play by both teams was in the South End zone today! Even the Field Goals the Youngstown missed were on our side of the field.

Update
After re-watching this game (4/13/2018) I have to ask, “Are these the same ‘Penguins’ that made the FCS National Championship?” It seems coach Pelini made a lot of changes and got his Offense out of the red-zone and into the end-zone.

Quotes

Youngstown Head Coach, Bo Pelini
This is a good football team. You come in here and you’re down 17–0, you’re going to have your problems.. You’ve got to score points; we haven’t been able to do that.. It feels like we haven’t scored an offensive touchdown in about two months. It’s frustrating.. We’ll make some changes, there are some big changes coming. We’re not playing well enough there (on offense) and we have to fix it.. (Will backup QB Nate Mays play more?) you might see a lot of different things offensively cause what we’re doing isn’t working.
Same thing happened to us at South Dakota State. I knew we had to start fast and next thing you know I look up and we’re down 17–0. It’s a recipe for disaster.. I told our guys. We have to help them more as coaches and you have to keep plugging along. We have a lot of football ahead of us. We’re moving the ball between the 20s but you have to score points.
NDSU Head Coach, Chris Klieman
That’s a dynamite (Penguins) defense that we played. I was pleased with some of the plays that we did make.
We’ve been lacking that. It was really important. Chase found a crack and he has better speed than a lot of people think. (on the 71 yard TD run)
(Injuries) are already stacking up, but nobody feels sorry for us. The next guy’s gotta step up. Nate’s an elite player. Nate’s one of the best defensive tackles in FCS. That’ll hurt us not having him in there. (on injuries, especially Nate Tanguay’s)
I saw them. (The FCS Rankings) I don’t have an opinion. There’s so much football in front of us for the Valley teams. We know anybody can beat anybody. I told our guys don’t pay attention to rankings and standings. Coaches don’t either. We’re just trying to go 1–0 this week again.
NDSU Running Back, Chase Morlock
Look out, we are having fun again. We only have a few games left in the dome, so we got to enjoy it.. I don’t know if we were letting pressure get to us. It is something we preach that doesn’t affect us, but we were playing a bit tight.
I had to check the big screen to make sure I was in the clear, to make sure I wasn’t getting hawked,” Morlock said on getting chased down from behind.” (on his 71 Touchdown run)
That’s huge for us, that’s what we’ve been missing for a couple of games. (big plays late in the game)
NDSU Linebacker, Matt Plank
We don’t really look at them as stars, we just see them as teammates. When one of them goes down, the next guy comes up. Everybody has to be ready to make plays. You feel for (Tanguay) because he’s a leader on this football team. At the same time, we always say, “Next man up.” Nate’s situation: next man up. My situation: next man up. We had some young guys rise to the occasion.
I just think we’re a tight-knit group of guys. We’re pretty tough once our backs are against the wall. We rely on that stuff. (on the Bison’s red-zone defense)
Hawked
A Verb. ‘To be overtaken by someone with greater speed than you in a very swift and quick fashion.’
Inforum Writer, Mike McFeely
The coach is correct when he said other FCS teams have zero sympathy for NDSU. That is football. And that is particularly football when it involves the Bison, a team that’s beat up everybody in the division since 2011. Ain’t nobody going to care if the Bison are left with nine true freshmen and two concession guys playing both ways for the rest of the season.
The alarm bells probably aren’t going off in Bisonville quite yet because injuries to important players haven’t stopped NDSU from winning in the last several years. The Bison have lost a key player or two most years, for lengthy stretches, and always seem to overcome it. Carson Wentz, Grant Olson, Travis Beck, Leevon Perry—they all had serious injuries.
