NDSU vs JMU 17 to 27

The NDSU ‘Bison’ host the James Madison ‘Dukes’ in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The number one seed of the MVFC vs the Number four from the Colonial play for a seat at the National Championship game in Frisco, TX.

The Bison and Dukes are both 12–1 for the year. It’s their second meeting. The Bison beat them 26–14 during the 2011 FCS playoffs. NDSU has won 22 straight FCS playoff games since the 2010. NDSU is 18–0 at home in the FCS playoffs. The past six FCS National Champions have played all their playoff games at home. Can NDSU make it seven?

It won’t be easy, James Madison has the number one offense in the FCS; averaging 49.6 points per game. The ’Dukes have scored 183 points in their last three games. Their 65–7 win over Sam Houston State last week was impressive and more than a little scary.

Will turnovers decide the winner tonight? NDSU is +10 but James Madison is +16 and has outscored their opponents 125–23 off turnovers. The ‘Dukes’ are coached by Mike Houston in his first year at JMU. He has taken a good team and made it great by emphasizing a physical style of football; especially on Defense.

Quotes

NDSU Head Coach, Chris Klieman
I’ve never been more proud to be the football coach here. You are not defined by a moment. You are defined by your body of work. That is the best body of work you are going to see in college football.. I hope you all appreciate what we’ve seen. It’s hard to do, guys. And somehow these guys got back there five times. It’s unprecedented in college football.. We have a bunch of warriors in that locker room and did something that has never been done before in college football. We are disappointed, but we’re not going to be miserable.
They’re a really good football team. The best team we’ve played this year hands down.
We missed some fits on him. (Khalid Abdullah) He broke some tackles and is just a dynamite player. We did some good things on him but missed some fits we typically don’t do.
NDSU Linebacker MJ Stumpf
(Khalid Abdullah) He’s a physical running back. I wouldn’t say we had tackling issues but a few times we had trouble bringing him down.
NDSU Defensive End, Brad Ambrosius
No I can’t (put the loss into words).. hurt. It was a good physical game. I don’t think there was pressure on us. We just couldn’t get it done.
NDSU Running Back, Chase Morlock
It’s hard to see that stuff now. (The Bison’s 83–7 record) We’re hurting a little bit. There is nothing to hang our head about.
NDSU Offensive Tackle, Landon Lechler
It’s been great. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. This a lifelong dream to be a Bison and represent the state.
James Madison Head Coach, Mike Houston
We talked about the traits this program has at North Dakota State. They are traits we believe in and we talked about North Dakota State. If we wanted to achieve our goals, we made no qualms about it.. In essence, we’ve built this team to try to go in and win this game.
We’re not a finesse team. We’re a physical football team. Offensively, running the football. We’re physical up front on the offensive front. Defensively, we’ve become a very physical defensive front. We’ve become a group that plays with a tremendous amount of intensity and passion. There is not anything about us that equates to finesse, soft, anything along those lines. Our kids, when they take the field, are going to hit you right in the face and they’re going to come at you as hard as they can. That is a mindset that has to be taught and that is a mindset that has to be demanded on a daily basis. Our players have bought into that. That is what North Dakota State is as well.
We’ve (broken) some pretty long winning streaks of home teams when we’re the visitor this year. We’ve gotta go in there and be us and do what we do. The key to it is just us being us.
I don’t know if you will ever see a run like that again at the FCS or the FBS level. They hit us square between the eyes in the third quarter and we were staggering pretty good.
Bryan’s been doing that all year. He has the ability to escape pressure and makes plays.
JMU Quarterback, Bryan Schor
I’ve been saying for a while if you wanna go win a championship it has to go through Fargo, North Dakota. I would say I’m excited and I think I speak for the rest of the team when I say that.
Just being up here in Fargo, you can see it’s a special place. It’s a special place for college football. For us to come in and win here means a lot.. Until you step into this dome, you have no idea what anyone is talking about. What everyone said is true. We are very proud of what we just did.. This is what late-December football is all about.
I didn’t really realize it in that moment but when he (Tyler Gray) hit that field goal things started to change for us a little bit. We had a little more momentum, we kind of hit the brakes for their momentum and swung it back in our favor.
JMU Running Back, Khalid Abdullah
I’m not gonna lie and make it seem like it’s not a big game because it is. At the same time, you’ve gotta be able to adjust, you’ve gotta be able to go out there and do the things that you’ve been doing well all season and that’s how you win.
Coming into the game I felt pretty good about our offensive scheme. I felt pretty good about what me and Bryan were going to be able to do as well as Matt Frank (and the O-line). I feel like anybody could’ve ran through the holes that they made.
JMU Offensive Lineman, Matt Frank
From the beginning, you could tell we’re a hard-nosed football team. We have a team willing to face anyone.
InForum Reporter, Mike McFeely
A cool scene unfolded outside the North Dakota State locker room in the lower level of the Fargodome after the Bison lost to James Madison. NDSU’s Brad Ambrosius, heading toward the postgame press conference, spotted the four James Madison players who just completed their remarks to the media. “Hey, guys. Great job. Congratulations,” Ambrosius said to Dimitri Holloway, Bryan Schor, Khalid Abdullah and Matt Frank. The four Dukes returned the compliments. Abdullah reached out to shake Ambrosius’ hand and they embraced, again congratulating one another. Ambrosius and the other three Dukes all shared hugs, handshakes and praise. Other Bison players making their way into the locker room also congratulated the James Madison players, who again returned the praise. It was a genuine moment between college athletes who had just battled for three hours on the field. The Dukes were elated. Ambrosius and the Bison were disappointed.

The quest for six ended like it started, a game in the Fargodome, against James Madison. The Bison won that night in 2011, and it started something special. But after five years, 90 games, it was that same James Madison program that would end it.. (and) the Dukes did it with pure Bison football.
