The North Dakota Super Bowl – it sounds like a punch line to a bad joke, but it’s no joke.
The NDSU and UND football teams have been playing each other since 1894. Today’s game would be their 111th meeting. For long time fans this is the Game. The National Championship Trophies are nice, but it’s not the The Nickel. The Nickel Trophy is given to the winning team to hold after each game. This 75-pound trophy was introduced in 1938: with a Bison on one side; Indian Head on the other- an oversized replica of the original Indian-head Nickel. The rivalry was suspended after the 2003 game, which UND won 28–21 in overtime. UND won the previous three games and were 4–1 in the Fargodome. Their overall record against the Bison was 62–45–3.
